Nurse claims discrimination over religious jewellery

-

A nurse was asked to remove her crucifix necklace for health and safetyA nurse is set to accuse her employers of discrimination after being asked to remove a necklace which featured a Christian cross, reports have revealed.

Shirley Chaplin, 54, has worked as a nurse for 30 years and despite wearing the necklace since she began her training, she was asked by Royal Devon & Exeter Trust to remove it.

The employers claim that the garment poses a health and safety risk and could prove to be a threat both to her or a patient.

However, Ms Chaplin has said that the request is in fact a violation of her human rights, the Press Association reports.

"This blatant piece of political correctness amounts to the marginalising of employees’ personal human rights, a blanket secularising and neutralising of the NHS intended to stop Christians from expressing their faith," she said.

The Christian Legal Centre, who is representing Ms Chaplin, has stated that she has since requested it to file for action at the Employment Tribunal for discrimination by her employers.

Meanwhile, a 22-year-old female prison officer recently won an employment tribunal, where she claimed she was unfairly dismissed.
