Employee engagement ‘at all-time low’

Many employees are feeling stressedAlthough the economy looks to finally be on its way out of the recession, employee engagement in the UK is at an all-time low, it has been suggested.

According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), job satisfaction in the UK has fallen to 35 this year, from 48 in 2009, with issues such as concerns over career security and stress thought to be the cause.

Britons aged 18 to 24 saw an even sharper decline in job satisfaction, with a fall from 44 to only five.

CIPD lead adviser and co-author of the survey Claire McCartney said employers needed to continue working hard to build up motivation and commitment among their workforce.

She added such people were likely to be “bruised by job insecurity, lack of consultation over change, pay freezes or cuts, as well as increases in stress and conflict”.

Ms McCartney continued the “real economy” which everyday workers were experiencing was “crippled”.

This week, the CIPD warned the government that planned increases in National Insurance contributions could put jobs at risk.
