Equal pay progress slowing, report finds

Equal pay progress slowing, report findsNew research from the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has found that moves to reduce the gender pay gap are "grinding to a halt", with women still finding it difficult to win senior roles.

According to the organisation's How Fair is Britain report – which was published this week – women in full-time jobs are earning on average 16.4 per cent less than their male counterparts, with those aged over 40 paid 27 per cent less.

"We are still a country where our achievements haven't yet caught up with our aspirations," said EHRC chair Trevor Phillips. "In the 21st century we face a fresh challenge – the danger of a society divided by the barriers of inequality and injustice."

He added that the recent economic downturn and changes in social demographics also risk creating further divisions between different sectors of British society.
