Junior doctors in England will strike next Tuesday after intensive government talks broke down. The British Medical Association has been battling the government over a proposed new contract since last year.
A last-ditch offer was made to Britain’s 45,000 junior doctors on Monday by the government, as the talks aimed at finding a settlement in the protracted dispute hit a critical point.
Walkout
The walkout is set to take place on the 13 January. This is likely to be followed by two further days of industrial action in which they do not work at all between 9am and 5pm. Although NHS services will be completely disrupted by the action, it is likely that Army medics will be drafted in to help reduce the increased satrain on the system.
Previous strike action was suspended at the last moment to allow negotiations to resume after Acas, the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service was drafted into help secure a deal.
Junior doctors believe that the new contract will lead to medics working longer hours for less salary.
