Workplace stress on the rise, says expert

-

Employers have been urged to abide by HSE stress guidanceAn expert has claimed that the number of people feeling the strain of modern workplace requirements could be on the increase and urged employers to stick to health and safety guidelines to combat stress.

Ann McCracken, chair of the International Stress Management Association UK (ISMA UK), recommended that bosses familiarise themselves with the Health and Safety Executive's guidelines for reducing anxiety.

"Anecdotally, yes, our members have noticed that they are meeting and working with more people concerned about work," she explained. "Companies are currently required to carry out risk assessments for stress within their organisation."

Ms McCracken acknowledged that it can be difficult to keep tabs on how individual members of staff are coping with their responsibilities at work, but recommended building good relationships and providing sufficient support.
