Employees search for a new role at work due to boredom

Over a third say they search for new jobs whilst at work due to boredom.

This is according to CV-Library’s Candidate Behaviour Barometer which found that 35 per cent of employees search for a new role whilst at work due to the boredom they feel the job brings.

Over a tenth (11 per cent) said they search for jobs at work because they feel too tired to do this after work and 9 per cent because they do not have a computer at home.

It also found that 10 am on Wednesdays is the most popular time to view job ads with 17 per cent stating this. However, nearly a fifth (18 per cent) of people do not apply to these jobs until Monday at 11 am.

The days most unlikely for job applications to be made are Saturday (9 per cent) and Sunday (9 per cent), showing that most people like to search and apply for jobs whilst working at their current role. Over half (54 per cent) state that they search for jobs when they are meant to be working, with 58 per cent saying they do not feel guilty about doing this.

Nearly two-thirds (62 per cent) of employees who have been forced to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic have been looking for a new role as 80 per cent admitted it has been easier to search for a new role because they have been away from the workplace.

Lee Biggins, founder and CEO of CV-Library, said:

Employers and recruiters that are continuing to hire during the pandemic are in a fortunate position, as there are more active job hunters on the market right now. But, while the job market has shifted, understanding how candidates behave will always be important. Our latest report provides some fantastic insights that can help you streamline your hiring process; and ultimately speed up your time to hire, while reducing costs.

We might be in the middle of a pandemic, but that isn’t stopping people from searching and applying to new jobs. Definitely make the most of this active talent pool if you can, but have a think about the best times to advertise your jobs and what you should be including in them to make them as appealing as possible.

In order to obtain these results, the job board analysed millions of data points from its site between 01/07/19 and 30/06/20 to understand the most popular times and days of the week for job views and applications. It also surveyed 1,700 UK professionals to gain insights on how people balance their job search with their existing role.
