EHRC publishes disability convention guide

Disability guide is aiming to promote equalityThe Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has released guidance on how to follow new policies regarding disability outlined by the United Nations (UN).

Entitled the UN Convention on the Rights of Disabled Persons (UNCRDP), the legislation covers a range of issues including employment, health, education and access to justice.

According to the EHRC, its publication will help individuals in this demographic to understand and use their civil liberties.

Chair of the organisation’s disability committee Mike Smith said Britain signed up to the UN treaty more than a year ago, adding that his institution is working hard to ensure it is implemented properly.

He remarked: "[The Convention] requires government to take action to remove barriers and give disabled people real freedom, dignity and equality."

Earlier this month, the EHRC welcomed the decision to appoint Diane Mulligan as the UK candidate for the UN expert committee on the rights of disabled people.
