The UK job market is experiencing a stark shift, with job applications reaching record highs while job opportunities decline.
Tribepad, a talent acquisition platform trusted by major employers, has released autumn 2024 recruitment data, revealing a 286 percent year-on-year increase in applications per job in November. The figures show a growing competition among job seekers as businesses continue to limit hiring due to economic pressures.
Between September and November 2024, Tribepad’s platform processed over 4.5 million applications, marking a 64 percent rise compared to the same period last year. The average number of applications per vacancy climbed to 48.7 in November – up 119 percent compared to the same month in 2023. Advancements in technology, particularly the use of AI tools, may be enabling candidates to submit more applications at a faster pace – explaining in part the dramatic increase in the number of applications employers must manage.
Despite the rise in applications, job postings have dropped noticeably. Tribepad’s clients advertised 165,320 roles during the autumn period, reflecting a 24 percent year-on-year decline.
Decline in Job Postings and Business Challenges
While job applications have soared, the number of job postings continues to decline. Businesses are taking a cautious approach to hiring amid ongoing economic pressures, including increased National Insurance contributions and the impact of the Chancellor’s autumn budget.
In November alone, job postings fell by 43 percent compared to the same month in 2023. However, autumn recruitment still saw a seasonal boost, with job advertisements rising by 34 percent compared to the quieter summer months. This uplift was primarily driven by increased hiring activity in retail and hospitality ahead of the festive season. Still, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reports 28 consecutive months of declining vacancies.
Dean Sadler, CEO from Tribepad, said, “The figures we’re seeing reflect a labour market in flux. Businesses are reducing their hiring activity in response to economic pressures and the recent budget, while job seekers are also responding to economic pressures – by seeking jobs. 48.7 applications per job is a clear sign of a highly competitive market, making it critical for employers to rethink their recruitment strategies to manage this influx and identify the best candidates.
“But at the same time, efficiency must not sacrifice fairness – removing bias and offering equal opportunities is absolutely key.”
