Businesses ‘offered incentives to go green’

Consumers are to have a better idea of the corporate and social responsibility (CSR) policy of the business they choose to buy products from or use the services of under a new government initiative.

Last week, the Department of Energy and Climate Change announced the introduction of the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme.

Organisations have until September to register for the scheme, which will chart the energy performance of participants in a league table, which could give customers a clearer picture of the CSR agenda of the company they choose.

Revenue raised from sale of emissions allowances will then be recycled back to the participants, with those who have demonstrated the best efficiency receiving the most.

Supermarkets, hotels, hospitals, local authorities and central government departments will all be required to improve their energy efficiency under the scheme.

A spokesperson from the Renewable Energy Centre.co.uk said: "Many of the larger business across the UK will also see this as an excellent way to show the public they are serious about climate change and reducing carbon emissions."
