Communication with young workers crucial, expert says

Managers should take care to build up good working relationships with younger employees to ensure they feel comfortable with the demands of their new role, an expert has recommended.

Guy Emmerson, associate director at recruitment consultancy firm Badenoch & Clark, suggested that some companies have been distracted from maintaining healthy employer-employee relations during the recent economic downturn.

"Generation Y have been affected more than others, because they are new to the market so they are unaware of how things work," he explained. "Communication needs to be really strong between the manager and the employees."

Mr Emmerson stressed the importance of instilling workers with a clear corporate vision and added that newly-recruited graduates should be encouraged to solicit feedback on how they are adapting to life in full-time employment.
