CIPD calls for improved employee engagement

The Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD) has warned companies that failing to address bad management will leave them at increased risk of losing talented staff.

CIPD employee relations adviser Mike Emmott explained that workers who are not made to feel like a valued member of a team are more likely to be tempted elsewhere, with many unhappy at the lack of feedback they receive from bosses.

"It's often said that employees join organisations but leave bad bosses," he observed. "The answer to how to motivate and retain staff is to see that they are engaged."

Mr Emmott added that although the UK's recent financial worries have made some staff feel less secure in their role, younger employees remain particularly ambitious and demanding when it comes to job satisfaction.

His comments came after research conducted by first direct revealed 28 per cent of individuals polled said they had switched employers in an effort to find a better boss.
