List of minimum wage sinners released

-

A list of minimum wage shame has been released by the government, listing companies who have a history of failing to pay their employees the minimum wage.

The list was topped by clothing retailers Monsoon Accessorize, by quite a large margin. The company failed to pay £104,508 to 1,438 workers. Following Monsoon, some distance behind were Tyne & Wear Riding for the Disabled Association.

The top five minimum wager sinners were:

  1. Monsoon Accessorize Ltd – £104,508 to 1,438 workers
  2. Tyne & Wear Riding for the Disabled Association – £27,152 to six workers
  3. Project Security UK Ltd – £23,857 to 18 workers
  4. Carl Keith Salons Ltd – £20,535 to five workers
  5. Cornwall Glass & Glazing Ltd – £14,254 to nine workers

The NMW rose to £6.70 an hour on 1 October for workers aged 21 and over and will soon rise further when the National Living Wage increases come into effect.

Monsoon have said in statement that they plan to address the issue and said that their salary packets often dropped below the minimum because they had a policy of offering discounted clothes to staff.

“Today’s list of offenders is only the tip of the iceberg,” commented TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady in a statement. “I am particularly saddened to see Monsoon Accessorize acting in breach of the law. A large firm with thousands of employees has no excuse for not having proper systems in place to ensure staff get their legal wages,” O’Grady commented.
