Guidance on employing refugees published

-

Bosses are being urged to learn whom they can employ, after new guidelines were announced by the government.

The Home Office UK Border Agency released Guidance for Employers on Preventing Illegal Working: Asylum Seekers and Refugees to clarify what documents managers should insist on seeing to ensure their staff have the right to work in this country.

Warning that hiring someone who is not legally entitled to have a job is an offence, the booklet discusses protocols for asylum seekers, refugees and those with humanitarian protection.

The guide also mentions Indefinite Leave to Remain, which can be granted to people who have completed five years in the UK, although policies are still being developed.

Chief executive of the Refugee Council Donna Covey said the organisation was “delighted” that new guidance has been published, going on to urge employers to respect the rights of those who have come to this country.

“They can also capitalise on the amazing skills and talents refugees can bring to the British workplace,” she explained.
