The 60-year-old presenter is set to read the news on Chris Evans’ Radio 2 Breakfast Show, after leaving in 2007.
She said she is delighted to be joining the show and is looking forward to having some fun.
And Evans added: “It doesn’t get any better than Moira Stuart. The voice, the authority, the style, the class, plus a side of her the majority of people have never seen before.”
He claimed she is a funny woman and “ever such a little bit naughty”.
Ms Stuart was the first female African-Caribbean newsreader, after joining the BBC in 1981.
In 2001, she was awarded an OBE.
Ms Stuart’s departure, along with the much publicised replacement of Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips, 66, with Alesha Dixon, 30, has led to complaints from the public of age discrimination against the media group’s female presenters.
Indeed, minister for equality Harriet Harman recently stated on the Radio 4 show The World This Weekend that broadcast media does not find it possible to value older women.
