Recruitment will be hot Christmas Day topic

Families and friends tucking into turkey around the dinner table this Christmas Day are likely to be keen to discuss recruitment and their different careers, it has been claimed.

According to research by the Careers Advice Service, 22 per cent of diners will be talking about jobs and careers as they eat this festive season, while 31 per cent will be talking about the outcome of the turkey.

And the recession is unlikely to be far from people’s minds as they enjoy the celebrations, with the survey noting one in five Britons are worried about their jobs, while a further 60 per cent have put any plans for a career change on hold.

Jenny Kneafsey, from the Careers Advice Service, said: “We know that people are concerned about their job and careers at Christmas, but rather than talk about it people tend to bottle up these concerns instead.”

HR departments may wish to make it a priority to ascertain whether their workforce has any similar concerns before the festive break.

They may also wish to boost morale with a Christmas party, although uSwitch.com recently revealed 42 per cent of small businesses will not be hosting any such festivities due to financial concerns.
